Changchun Selected as One of China's Historic Cultural Cities

Changchun, capital of Jilin province, was recently listed as a "National Historic Cultural City", according to a file published by the State Council.

The file points out that Changchun is a city with rich historic relics, an unique urban structure, outstanding industrial heritage and abundant intangible cultural heritage.

Its buildings are typical examples of modern styles and the city is also a cradle for China's auto and film industries, as well as various folk cultures and natural features.

The listing will promote the city's image and its development. Meanwhile, the city will have better protection policies in terms of its ancient architecture and traditional culture.

Before Changchun, only five cities in NE China had been selected as a "National Historic Cultural City". They were Harbin and Qiqihar in Heilongjiang province, Jilin city and Ji'an in Jilin province, and Shenyang, Liaoning province.

The State Council's list mentions the tension between urban construction and protection of historic architecture and requires that all reconstruction should be conducted on the basis of protection of the ancient relics.
